Theological Institute (full name: St. Tikhon Orthodox Theological Institute (PSTBI)) is a theological educational institution of the Russian Orthodox Church, the main task of which is to train clergy. Our goal: to provide students and graduates of the theological faculty of PSTGU with a spiritual education sufficient to be ordained to the priesthood and to enable pastoral service in the community in the modern world.

What is the difference between PSTBI and seminaries?

A feature of spiritual education at the Institute is the lack of boarding, which allows students to maintain a close relationship with their parish, as well as combining spiritual education with secular (students simultaneously study at the theological faculty of PSTGU and receive state diplomas).

As part of the educational process, students of the Institute receive the necessary knowledge in all church-practical disciplines that are required to be studied in theological educational institutions of the Russian Church. The Institute has seminars conducted by famous pastors - priests and bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Why should I study at PSTB, is not a bachelor of theology diploma enough for ordination?

Application deadlines: from August 25 to September 14.
Entrance tests:
To the additional educational program "Preparatory course of study": interview, God's Law.
On the program of higher religious education "Training of Ministers and Religious Personnel of the Orthodox Religion": interview, Fundamentals of Orthodox theology.

And if I am a part-time student, then studying at PSTB is impossible for me?

The correspondence courses of the theological faculty of the Theology direction can be taught in the evening department of the Institute, which implies a weekly training load. The conditions for admission are the same as for other students.

What documents are needed for admission?

 • Application for admission in the approved form (to be filled in by the Admissions Committee when submitting documents)
 • The recommendation of the confessor on the letterhead of the canonical unit of the Russian Orthodox Church (with seal), indicating the absence of canonical obstacles to the ordination of the priesthood;

How are the entrance tests?

Tests for God's law and Fundamentals of Orthodox Theology conducted in writing and orally. The results of these entrance tests are evaluated on a 100-point scale.

Job interview conducts an examination commission composed of clergy and teachers of the Institute. The interview is conducted with each applicant separately. The results of the interview are evaluated by the selection committee for compliance with the canonical requirements of the Russian Orthodox Church for possible ordination to the priesthood as satisfactory or unsatisfactory.

Scientific work at the university is conducted not only in 40 departments, but also in 9 created scientific centers, departments and laboratories.

Scientific Center for the History of Theology and Theological Education is one of the scientific divisions of the Theological Faculty of PSTGU. The center was created in 2010 on the basis of a team of scientists working at the faculty who were involved in the history of Russian theological tradition and spiritual education.

Currently, the Scientific Center is developing two areas: the history of Russian theology of the 18th - early 20th centuries. and the history of higher spiritual education in Russia of the same period. In each of the areas several projects are being implemented. In the first direction, the central place is occupied by projects for the study of the life and heritage of St. Filaret (Drozdov) and the patristic heritage of the synodal era as a whole. In the second direction, attention is focused mainly on the formation of the Russian scientific and educational theological tradition, the adaptation of European educational models in it and the characteristics of the Russian spiritual school as a phenomenon.

Within the framework of the Scientific Center there is a weekly seminar in which not only the members of the center, but also invited specialists participate.

Head of the Center - Doctor of Historical Sciences, Doctor of Historical Sciences N.Yu. Sukhova.

Research Department of the Recent History of the Russian Orthodox Church

The department was created in 1992 in accordance with the Patriarchal blessing “to concentrate at the Institute work on the study of the history of the Russian Orthodox Church of the twentieth century”. The first task was the collection of materials, an unbiased analysis and recreation of a true picture of the life of the Russian Church in the twentieth century. The starting point in the work was a rich heritage - the archive of the remarkable church historian-ascetic M.E. Gubonin (+1971 g).

The first publication of the most important archive documents in the book “Acts of His Holiness Patriarch Tikhon and later documents on the succession of the supreme church authority of 1917-1943” marked the beginning of the multi-volume series “Materials on the Recent History of the Russian Orthodox Church”. In the following years, the university’s own archive was created, the previously closed state archives were carefully studied. Hard work has brought abundant results: a number of monographs, a lot of scientific articles, reports, a lot of work on organizing large-scale research, as well as studying the investigative files of people buried at the Butovo landfill, identifying many names of victims of faith, a stream of newly opened documents. The work of the department was highly appreciated by the Hierarchy and representatives of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and contributed much to the restoration of the canonical unity of the Russian Orthodox Church.

As a member of the Synodal Commission for the Canonization of Saints, the rector of the PSTU Archpriest Vladimir Vorobyev, who heads the Department of Contemporary History of the Russian Orthodox Church, took an active part in preparing the glorification of the Council of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia at the 2000 Anniversary Bishops' Council. The materials collected in the university archive were used to create the icon of the Cathedral of the New Martyrs and Confessors, written in PSTGU to the Act of Canonization.

Research Seminar "Sociology of Religion" (http://socrel.pstgu.ru) - a scientific project operating at the Theological Faculty of PSTU since 2007 under the direction of the Vice-Rector of the Theological Institute at PSTU Archpriest Nikolai Emelyanov.

In 2015, the research laboratory “Sociology of Religion” was created in the structure of PSTGU, whose employees form the core of the seminar team. The seminar team consists of sociologists, theologians, philosophers, religious scholars and mathematicians - graduates of the Moscow School of Economics and Social Sciences, Moscow State University, NRU HSE, PSTGU. The laboratory supervisor is Ph.D., associate professor of the Department of Philosophy of Religion and Religious Aspects of Culture of the Theological Faculty of PSTU Ivan Zabaev.

The Sociology of Religion team sees its mission in promoting the growth of unbiased academic studies of religion, conducting the sociological studies necessary to make decisions regarding important issues of the life of the Russian Orthodox Church and secular society, and promoting the growth of self-understanding of the Russian Orthodox Church.

In the framework of the Sociology of Religion IL, fundamental and applied sociological studies of religious issues are carried out. One of the main areas of work is the study of the effects of religiosity in societies where the mechanisms of intergenerational transmission of religion have been destroyed; an attempt is made to assess the specificity and dynamics of the diffusion of religion in society, the nature of its influence on the behavior of people in various spheres of life. The research results are presented in the form of publications in scientific journals, and are also presented to practitioners at round tables, workshops, and summer schools. Analytical reports are published on the project website.

Research projects are implemented with the support of the PSTGU Development Fund, Russian and international foundations, including the Russian Federal Property Fund, Russian Humanitarian Research Foundation, ISEPS, and the Swiss Science Foundation.

Currently, 10 projects are being implemented in parallel. From 2008 to 2016, about 150 scientific papers were published (including articles, reviews, monographs, and chapters from collections). In 2016, laboratory staff took part in 44 scientific and practical events, among which 14 were organized at universities abroad.

The laboratory is in constant cooperation with universities and research centers in the USA and Europe, including the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, the University of Bologna and the University of Padua (Italy), the University of Berne (Switzerland), the University of Vienna (Austria), and the Academy of Abo (Finland) and others. Since 2015, the laboratory has been conducting annual research in collaboration with the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Service.

Scientific Center for the Psychology of Religion at the Department of Philosophy of Religion and Religious Aspects of Culture

The center was established in 2014 and is currently the only scientific center for the psychology of religion in Russia.

The purpose of the center is to actualize the psychology of religion as a religious discipline in the domestic scientific space.

The main activities of the center are: updating and adaptation of the main directions of the world psychology of religion in the Russian context; the study of world and domestic history of the psychology of religion in their relationship; conducting empirical research in the field of psychology of religion.

In 2014-2016 The project of the center “Modern Western Psychology of Religion: Adaptation in the Russian Context” received a grant from the Russian Science Foundation No. 14-18-03771 (the project was completed).

Most programs are implemented both in full-time and part-time studies. In the areas of Theology and Religious Studies, budget places are available.

Educational and educational work

The idea of organizing an open theological education for the laity in the Russian Orthodox Church, which was actively discussed before the revolution (such educational structures were formed in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan on the eve of the revolution or immediately after it), was most successfully realized by Russian emigrants in Paris (St. Sergius Theological Institute), and then in New York (St. Vladimir Theological Academy). These educational institutions played a huge role in the development of Orthodox church life in the West. Of the graduates of the Paris Sergius Theological Institute, more than fifty became bishops of various Orthodox Churches, many priests and laity who received a theological education at the Russian Institute, worked hard to establish Orthodoxy around the world.

The task of the Orthodox St. Tikhon's Theological Institute, created when the Russian Orthodox Church gained freedom after a long period of persecution, was to train qualified personnel necessary for church work in all areas of church and public life. In addition, the Church was to take advantage of the ensuing freedom and make available a theological and Orthodox humanitarian education for all who sought to return to the Orthodox culture, to the Orthodox faith, to the spiritual roots of the Russian people.

The basis of the academic work at PSTU was the principle of basic fundamental education, which is usual for classical universities, combined with serious study of foreign languages, philosophy, and Russian history. As professional level increases, highly specialized workload increases. In senior courses, students perform term papers, then choose the topic of the thesis, leader. The fourth course ends with the defense of the thesis. In the case of a successfully completed training program and protection, a bachelor's degree is issued. Those who wish to deepen their knowledge and acquire a higher professional level, enter the magistracy. The master's program also ends with the defense of a master's work. To accomplish this, future masters often have to undergo an internship abroad, master the foreign language well, and actively work in foreign archives and libraries. The next level is graduate school and the preparation of a candidate dissertation. At all levels, students listen to lectures, work in seminars, pass tests and exams, participate in any general faculty or university extra workloads.

From the first course, students work in summer labor camps, in the following courses mission trips are arranged, and various practices (depending on the specialty). From the first year, all students participate in liturgical life, usually organized by faculty. There are student scientific circles at the faculties, holiday performances, concerts, meetings with famous hierarchs, learned theologians, etc. are organized.

The University has a number of joint scientific and educational programs with domestic and foreign educational institutions, scientific organizations and foundations, international student and teacher exchange programs are being implemented, and international conferences are being held.

Permanent contacts are maintained with foreign training centers: the Orthodox St. Sergius Theological Institute (Paris, France), the St. Vladimir Theological Academy (USA), the theological faculties of the universities of Belgrade (Serbia), Bucharest (Romania), Sofia (Bulgaria), the Institute of Orthodox Studies (Cambridge, UK), the Christian Theological Academy (Warsaw, Poland), the Institute of East Christian Studies (Nijmegen, Holland), the theological faculty of the University. Humboldt (Berlin, Germany), University of Friborg (Switzerland).

Annually, about 150 citizens from the CIS countries, near and far abroad study at PSTGU. For an internship of more than 1 semester, the university accepts an average of 11 foreign students each year. In turn, more than 10 students of PSTGU undergo internships at foreign universities annually.

I studied at the University for 7 years. All my life and study in the walls of the university will forever remain a diamond in my biography. I studied with teachers who devoted their whole lives to their work, their vocation. They infect with interest and love for their subject. Therefore, all full-time students at PSTGU study completely free of charge, but the cost of evening or correspondence education is also much lower than the cost at other universities - only 18,000 rubles a year.

The university has 10 faculties and 28 different areas and specialties. The basis of training in each of them is a deep study of foreign languages - 17 languages are taught at the State Technical University, among which there are both modern and ancient. A lot of attention in the university is paid to history and philosophy. But most importantly, this university provides an opportunity for every person, regardless of their gender, as well as their material and physical position, to become useful to the Church.

At present, more than 2,000 people study in full-time, evening and correspondence courses at the Perm State Technical University, and about 500 people undergo professional retraining in the specialty “Theology”.

Applicants have the opportunity to study at the preparatory department, as well as at the Choir School, where they can receive secondary vocational education. During the academic year, the university holds the AXIOS Olympiad in 11 different subjects, the winners of which later have advantages over other applicants for admission to PSTGU.

At the end of the university with a bachelor's degree, a student can continue to study for a master's degree. And for people who have already received education in ordinary secular universities, there is the possibility of obtaining a second higher education or taking a refresher course.

Scientific activity of PSTGU

PSTGU senior students apply the knowledge gained at lectures and seminars in the scientific activities of the university. A department of the Recent History of the Russian Orthodox Church is open for them, where they study history even more thoroughly, and on the basis of this they write dissertations. There is also an information analytical center for the Faculty of Social Sciences, equipped with modern computers with Internet access.

Seminars on missionary service and problems of theology are held at various faculties. Students can express their opinions on them how to convey the word of God to the population of the country and how to help those in need. PSTGU also organizes meetings of the Philaret Seminar together with the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, so students who are able to show themselves well there can count on further work in this church.

Students who do not want to leave the university after graduation can continue to work in it as a graduate student. In 2010, the Dissertation Council was opened here, which includes the best specialists not only from PSTU, but also from various faculties of Moscow State University and other leading universities of Russia.

Every year, the University hosts an International Theological Conference, where students, together with their teachers, discuss the problems of theology, as well as philosophy, history and pedagogy.
